NFTs and Digital Art: Understanding the Ownership Revolution

June 17, 2024

NFTs did not invent digital scarcity — they made it programmable, verifiable, and transferable for the first time.

When Beeple sold a digital artwork for $69 million at Christie's in March 2021, the world suddenly paid attention to non-fungible tokens. The ensuing frenzy — and subsequent correction — obscured a genuinely interesting technological development beneath layers of speculation.

What an NFT Actually Is

An NFT is a unique cryptographic token on a blockchain that represents ownership of a specific item — digital or physical. Unlike Bitcoin or Ether, each NFT is distinct and cannot be exchanged on a like-for-like basis. The smart contract that governs it can encode royalties, unlock utilities, or grant access to communities.

"The value of an NFT is not in the JPEG. It's in the community, the utility, and the cultural meaning that the holder community agrees to assign to it."

Conclusion

The NFT market will continue to evolve, and the speculative excesses of 2021 have already given way to more thoughtful applications in gaming, ticketing, and identity. The technology itself is sound; the question is where genuine value creation lies beyond the hype.
